The Three-Line Primary Guide Explained
Foundational handwriting curricula (including Zaner-Bloser, D’Nealian, and Montessori) rely on three distinct horizontal reference planes to build proportional letter memory:
- Top Headline: Defines the upper boundary for uppercase capital letters and tall ascender stems (such as b, d, h, k, l, and t).
- Dotted Midline: Establishes the exact ceiling for lowercase short letters (such as a, c, e, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, and z).
- Bottom Baseline: Anchors all letterforms. Descenders (such as g, j, p, q, and y) break through the baseline and extend cleanly into the lower space.
